Redesign the onboarding flow to enhance user experience and include a key differentiator of the WeatherBug app vs. competitors.
Activation of the user starts with the onboarding flow.
We wanted to make sure that users realize the value of the app as earlier as possible.
As one of the key differentiators of WeatherBug from our competitors is the 20 free map layers,
we wanted to highlight this feature to our users and encourage them to explore the map layers.
The refreshed design of the onboarding flow will also help keep the users' interests and maintain user
retention.
In phase 2, we also focused on improving the experience by updating the UI to better show the value
proposition of the premissions requested.
Outdated design. Lack of personality and brand identity. Small app preview.
Breakdown of the components in the Onboarding UI in layer view
This framework will eliminate the problems we had with adjusting the content to different device sizes. Rather than increasing and decreasing the content, the sticky bottom card will slide up and down depending on the height of the user's device. We will adopt this framework in other parts of the app that uses the same format (ex. subscription management).
Dynamic design with brand colors. Enlarged, clear app preview. Branded illustrations. Added paginations to show progress.
The new "Weather where you are" page was added due to legal requirements.
However, the copy required by the legal was too hefty and thus the space and design had
to be compromised.
Updated app preview with up-to-date app version. Minimized legal words & reordered text hierarchy. Shortened flow for higher retention.
Based on our data, there was a big drop in users on the last stage of the onboarding. Therefore, with attempts
to optimize the onboarding funnel, we took out the "Notifications where you are" page and moved the "Always
allow notifications" hard ask in-app.
We are currently conducting A/B testing with this new flow in comparison to the previous
flow to determine
whether the length of the onboarding was the reason for the high drop off rate.
We also made improvements to the "Weather where you are" page by moving the heavy legal text to the
bottom, so it does not interfere with the design and space.
