Build an Outdoor Sports section to enhance users' ability to make outdoor activity decisions through our outdoor sports index, daily conditions, safety tips, etc.
Based on conversation with internal stakeholders, we've decided to shift out approach from asking partners what features they would like/need for a potential partnership to presenting a feature set which aligns with WeatherBug's verticalization goals/users and asking if partners find value in it.
There will be a summary of today's Outdoor Sports conditions in the users' selected location
Users can quickly determine if their activities will be impacted by today's weather conditions
Users are given safety tips based on the current index
The icon color and text will correspond with the index value at the current time
Users will see a graph displaying the index for the following 16 hours so they can determine
how their activities will be affected at a quick glance
Users will be able to easily identify sunrise and sunset times, so that they can better plan
if they want to avoid exercising in the dark
Users can tap on the (i) icon on the top right corder of the Hourly Chart to get a full index
pop-up, so they can easily understand the different index severity levels
The index numbers are calculated based on our in-house formula
There will be key data points that are factored into WeatherBug's Outdoor Sports index formula
Users will be able to determine the impact based on conditions they value the most and the sports
they are participating in
Users can check both the hourly forecast within the Outdoor Sports section along with the index number at each hour
Users can view articles on Sports and Weather Safety, so they can educate themselves on necessary health advice and precautions
To keep WeatherBug and the Outdoor Sports section free for all users, our goal was to include advertisements or get sponsorship so that we can monetize the section and garner ad revenue.
After several years of collaborating with Disney, we were able to integrate Disney WeatherCheck in our Outdoor Sports section.
This is the first step to getting Outdoor Sports promoted on Disney properties such as runDisney and ESPN Wide World of Sports.
